Leveling Up Mental Health: Why We Are Bringing Geek Therapy to AVCon 2026

Adelaide’s premier anime and gaming festival is just around the corner! Mark your calendars, because AVCon is taking over the weekend of July 4th–5th, 2026.

Whether you are heading down for the spectacular cosplay, the panels, workshops, the artist alley, or the massive gaming zones—featuring everything from free-play consoles, PC tournaments, and VR to dedicated tabletop areas—there is no shortage of incredible culture to immerse yourself in.

This year, the excitement is doubling for us. Hive Minds Therapy is proud to announce that we are an official partner of AVCon 2026! We will be there in person all weekend, ready to chat with you about Geek Therapy—and how your favorite fandoms, gaming cultures, and passions can actively serve as powerful tools for therapeutic expression, communication, and identity.

The Hidden Power of Tabletop Gaming

For many of us, tabletop gaming is far more than just a casual weekend hobby. Rolling dice and moving miniatures can have profound benefits on our mental well-being and cognitive health. Engaging with tabletop games heavily supports:

  • Social Contact & Connection: Building community and combating isolation in a structured, safe environment.

  • Cooperation: Working together as a team to achieve common goals rather than competing against one another.

  • Working Memory: Tracking rules, stats, and narrative arcs gives your brain a fantastic workout.

  • Imagination & Creativity: Stepping outside of the everyday world to build rich, vibrant alternative universes.

  • Decision Making: Evaluating risks, weighing consequences, and problem-solving under unique pressures.

Beyond the Dungeon: Finding Your Gaming Comfort Zone

When people think of tabletop gaming or Role-Playing Games (RPGs), Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is usually the first name that comes to mind. Its massive commercial success and mainstream popularity have opened the door for millions of people to discover the joy of rolling a d20.

However, epic campaigns like D&D are not for everyone.

For some neurodiverse individuals, sitting at a loud table for hours or gaming in large groups can quickly become overwhelming from a sensory and social standpoint. The good news? The tabletop universe is vast.

There is an incredible world of small-group and solo tabletop games that completely step away from high-stakes conflict. Instead, these indie titles place a deeper emphasis on:

  • Personal reflection and mindfulness

  • Cooperative problem-solving

  • Quiet, artistic creativity

Discovering Indie Games (And Making Your Own)

While big blockbusters dominate the shelves, an exciting wave of emerging Indie game creators are producing unique tabletop games and RPGs that are just as much fun, often with a much gentler, more inclusive pace.

Exploring these indie titles does more than just offer a unique gameplay experience—it can also ignite your own inner creator. Seeing what a single designer can build shows players that making your own games is a highly accessible goal.

In fact, game design and narrative building is something we can explore right here at Hive Minds Therapy as part of your ongoing counselling support! Crafting your own rules, worlds, or characters can be a wonderful, tangible way to process emotions, unpack personal narratives, and build self-worth.
